DEFENSIVE TACKLE
4-3

Drafttek Live Positional Rankings

The Defensive Tackles in a 4-3 line up between the center and offensive guards. His responsibilities include:

1) Stop the run, particularly in the middle of the field
2) Maintain position - keep interior offensive linemen off of the linebackers
3) Provide interior pass rush, pushing and collapsing the pocket

This diagram shows the Defensive Tackles in a standard 4-3 alignment. One prospect may be selected over another based on the following factors:

A. Prevailing defensive philosophy: In a "read and react" 4-3, the defensive line controls the offensive line to allow the LBs to flow to the ball. In "attack and penetrate", the defensive line takes more of a 1-gap approach and the LBs have more gap responsibilities.

B. Opponent's offensive philosophy: In facing a power running game, the DTs have primary run-stopping responsibility, with support from the LBs and the Strong Safety. Responsibilities in the passing game are: 1) collapsing the pocket, 2) providing an interior pass rush and 3) increasing length (hands and arms up) to limit the opposing QB's vision of passing lanes.

All picks, 1 page! Drafttek prepared an internal-use spreadsheet for its analysts, who were tired of sifting through page after page to find historical draft picks. They said "put it online for our readers!" This resource allows fans to find all drafted players from the 2010-2013 drafts - side by side all on the same page.
