| 17 | New England |
Nate Solder Colorado LOT Reach/Value: -10 |
Height: 6'8" Weight: 319 |
CMD#31 Pre-Draft Pick Muhammad Wilkerson Live Mock Simulated Pick Cameron Jordan |
| A bit of a surprise, for sure, especially with Jordan & Wilkerson still on the board. I like the pick from a needs basis; Vollmer is solid at RT but Light is a FA & may be past his prime. They needed OL depth. Resigning Light & easing Solder in would be best. The Patriots are one of a few teams that can take a developmental player though. Grade: B |
| 18 | San Diego |
Corey Liuget Illinois DT34 Reach/Value: +0 |
Height: 6'2" Weight: 298 |
CMD#31 Pre-Draft Pick Aldon Smith Live Mock Simulated Pick Cameron Jordan |
| The Chargers needed DL help though taking Liuget over Jordan & Wilkerson raises some eyebrows. Liuget was believed to be best suited for a 4-3 scheme. If Liuget can play the 5-tech though, it works. They definitely filled a need, but may have went with the wrong guy. Grade: B- |
| 19 | NY Giants |
Prince Amukamara Nebraska CB Reach/Value: +5 |
Height: 6'0 Weight: 207 |
CMD#31 Pre-Draft Pick Mark Ingram Live Mock Simulated Pick Mark Ingram |
| Who saw this coming?! Prince Amukamara, a top 10 talent, slides due to a lot of QBs and DLs being taken. Amukamara was a 1st team All American and the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year. The Giants have solid cornerbacks, but after 2011 both Terrell Thomas and Aaron Ross will be free agents, so a CB makes a lot of sense. This is an absolute steal from Jerry Reese, and so far, arguably the best move in the first round. Grade: A |
| 20 | Tampa Bay |
Adrian Clayborn Iowa DE43 Reach/Value: -17 |
Height: 6'1" Weight: 294 |
CMD#31 Pre-Draft Pick Justin Houston Live Mock Simulated Pick Da'Quan Bowers |
| Drafttek had Clayborn mocked to Tampa Bay - in Round 2!! The Bucs were kinda sorta hoping that Ryan Kerrigan would fall to the 20. When he vacated the board, they were teased by CB Amukamara, who went just 1 pick earlier. But the Bucs need for a pass rusher trumped here. Justin Houston's drug test may have removed him from consideration, leaving Clayborn, Bowers, Sheard and Heyward to pick from. If Morris can work with Clayborn's limitations (Erb's Palsy) they could have a dynamic playmaker. Grade: B |
| 21 | Cleveland |
Phil Taylor Baylor DT34 Reach/Value: -26 |
Height: 6'3" Weight: 334 |
CMD#31 Pre-Draft Pick Derek Sherrod Live Mock Simulated Pick Derek Sherrod |
| After trading down with the Falcons, the Browns trade back up with the Chiefs to secure their defensive line. A little surprising they didn't go with Jordan or Bowers at DE since many thought Taylor would go to a 3-4 team. The Browns brass clearly thought DT was a bigger need than DE. Taylor excelled in a 4-3 as a Bear & should command a lot of attention from AFC North OLs. Grade: B+ |
| 22 | Indianapolis |
Anthony Castonzo Boston College LOT Reach/Value: +7 |
Height: 6'7" Weight: 311 |
CMD#31 Pre-Draft Pick Gabe Carimi Live Mock Simulated Pick Gabe Carimi |
| The Colts, for the first time in forever, select an offensive tackle in the 1st round. Of the potential LOT's the Colts get the guy with the best footwork of those available at this selection. Good quickness, good lateral movement and does well in the run blocking area, which Indy needs. Think of the irony of a BC grad heading from Mass. to protect Peyton Manning. Will need to bulk up to match his technical ability at the position. Still a possibility to eventually shift to the right side of the line once Ryan Diem calls it a career. Grade: B+ |
| 23 | Philadelphia |
Danny Watkins Baylor OG Reach/Value: -59 |
Height: 6'3" Weight: 310 |
CMD#31 Pre-Draft Pick Jimmy Smith Live Mock Simulated Pick Jimmy Smith |
| Philly gets an out-of-nowhere football player from the Great White North. Is a versatile offensive lineman who started 25 games at offensive left tackle before moving inside to the guard position. Andy Reid banks on a scouting report for Watkins that highlights his great hand work, good balance and a good kick-slide. He's a very tough blocker who will work diligently to become better and better at his craft. Grade: A |
| 24 | New Orleans |
Cameron Jordan California DE43 Reach/Value: +13 |
Height: 6'4" Weight: 287 |
CMD#31 Pre-Draft Pick Corey Liuget Live Mock Simulated Pick Da'Quan Bowers |
| Jordan finally goes off the board & is a superb value for the Saints. He can play inside or out along the DL & gives them insurance should players be suspended from the recently ended StarCaps case. Jordan was believed to be a top 10 to 15 pick for a while so the Saints may have gotten a steal. The Saints needed DL help & they got it in a big way. Grade: A |
|
|
| 25 | Seattle |
James Carpenter Alabama LOT Reach/Value: -61 |
Height: 6'4" Weight: 321 |
CMD#31 Pre-Draft Pick Jake Locker Live Mock Simulated Pick Jimmy Smith |
| In a first round full of surprising picks the Seahawks follow suit and select James Carpenter out of Alabama. While not a flashy decision it addresses an area of concern for the Hawks. Carpenter should be able to plug-in immediately at either guard or right tackle and instantly be an upgrade for a line responsible for the 31st ranked rushing offense in 2010. Grade: B |
| 26 | Kansas City |
Jonathan Baldwin Pittsburgh WRF Reach/Value: -33 |
Height: 6'4" Weight: 228 |
CMD#31 Pre-Draft Pick Brandon Harris Live Mock Simulated Pick Brandon Harris |
| WR was a definite need for the Chiefs & they're getting a polarizing one. Baldwin's talent is undeniable. He has the body type & speed to be a feature, go-to guy. However he has major character issues that will need to be rectified. High risk, high reward. Grade: C+ |
| 27 | Baltimore |
Jimmy Smith Colorado CB Reach/Value: -1 |
Height: 6'2" Weight: 211 |
CMD#31 Pre-Draft Pick Anthony Castonzo Live Mock Simulated Pick Jimmy Smith |
| The Ravens thought they had a trade in place with the Bears but it fell through & the clock ran out. The Chiefs jumped in front of the Ravens but Baltimore still landed a player at a position of need. Smith has elite potential & could have easily been a Top 15 pick... if he didn't have major off-the-field issues. He has been arrested & linked to a variety of drug issues. However, should he straighten up he could be a shut-down guy. Grade: B |
| 28 | New Orleans |
Mark Ingram Alabama RBF Reach/Value: +9 |
Height: 5'9" Weight: 215 |
CMD#31 Pre-Draft Pick Mikel LeShoure Live Mock Simulated Pick Mark Ingram |
| The Saints add another first round prospect by trading their #1 pick next season to the Patriots, and now have 4 RB's battling for a starting job. Perhaps Reggie Bush is about to make an exit? Ingram was rated the top RB in the draft and is perfectly suited for the New Orleans offense as Ingram played against the toughest competition in collegiate football and was the premier running back while doing so. Falling down this far, no doubt Ingram will love the opportunity to show ALL other teams what they missed when passing on him earlier. Grade: A |
| 29 | Chicago |
Gabe Carimi Wisconsin ROT Reach/Value: +6 |
Height: 6'7" Weight: 314 |
CMD#31 Pre-Draft Pick Nate Solder Live Mock Simulated Pick Gabe Carimi |
| Carimi will immediately upgrade the Bears offensive line and give them a run-blocking mauler who can also help protect Jay Cutler. Carimi is tenacious, has extremely strong hands and can utilize his immense bulk and size to get opposing defensive linemen moving backwards. Not an athletic, nimble big man, but will certainly be able to increase his effectiveness under the tutelage of Mike Tice. Grade: A |
| 30 | NY Jets |
Muhammad Wilkerson Temple DE34 Reach/Value: +9 |
Height: 6'4" Weight: 315 |
CMD#31 Pre-Draft Pick Jabaal Sheard Live Mock Simulated Pick Muhammad Wilkerson |
| Solid pass rushing DT who is tough against the run. Strong at the point of attack and has good footwork inside confined spaces. Long arms, ability to shoot gaps easily and has talent to elevate his ability as a pass rusher. Might not be an immediate impact player for the Jets, but over time will likely become a standout DT for New York. Grade: B+ |
| 31 | Pittsburgh |
Cameron Heyward Ohio State DE34 Reach/Value: +1 |
Height: 6'5" Weight: 294 |
CMD#31 Pre-Draft Pick Aaron Williams Live Mock Simulated Pick Brandon Harris |
| The Son of IronHead Heyward is a value pick here with a long view at the end of the first. Starters Smith and Keisel are both well north of 30 and both missed time last season. Paired with 2009 first rounder Ziggy Hood, the next generation of defensive ends is on deck for the Steelers. Heyward has the prototypical size, pedigree & was dynamic at Ohio State as a junior. Although he struggled some this past season, he's an excellent fit for Pittsburgh's scheme. Grade: B+ |
| 32 | Green Bay |
Derek Sherrod Mississippi State LOT Reach/Value: +10 |
Height: 6' 6" Weight: 312 |
CMD#31 Pre-Draft Pick Akeem Ayers Live Mock Simulated Pick Akeem Ayers |
| Love the pick - have to protect the franchise. Left tackle of the future for the Packers, although he may find a spot at guard in year one if Colledge leaves, Either way, this is a great pick for the Packers. Grade: A |
