In a classic offensive formation, there will be two wide receivers on the field. The Split End (SE) begins the play on the line of scrimmage. The Flanker (FL) prototypically lines up on the opposite side of the SE, a few yards off the scrimmage line. Sometimes third and even 4th WRs are used. These are called Slot (SL) receivers, lining up in the space (slot) between the offensive linemen and outside receivers.
Wide Receivers have the following responsibilities: 1) Catch forward passes from the Quarterback 2) Create diversions to confuse defenders 3) Participate in blocking and running plays as needed Drafttek hes determined that GMs go into the draft looking for WRs with certain traits or skills. But the SE, FL and SL playing field labels do not adequately describe these traits and skills when applied to college WR prospects. Drafttek created the descriptors WRF, WRS and WRP to categorize WR talent. Some players may fit into more than one group. WRF - College prospects who possess the blend of size, speed and route-running to function as a "feature" WR on the professional level. In the 1st and 2nd rounds GMs tend to target the full-featured WRFs, looking for the niche type WRP and WRS in lower rounds. |
