Round 7
Intro
After every NFL draft, pundits come out and proclaim the draft's winners and losers. An exercise in speculation, since none of the players drafted has played a single down of pro football. But now that the 2009 draft class has completed their sophomore seasons, we can go back to the 2009 draft and make a reasonable assessment as to the success of each team's draft class. It will be a one or two more years until winners are formally proclaimed, but it's getting late in the game for players who haven't shown anything yet. There are some positions which tend to take a little more time to master. And there are players selected as "projects" with the expectation that contribution may not come for a few years.
A few years ago, Drafttek.com devised a scoring system which assigned points to each team's draft picks. Points are assigned according to how well a player is performing. In the early rounds, draft picks are supposed to do well, so we do not assign too many points for successful picks. In the later rounds, successes are rewarded much more generously. Alternately, 1st round flops are punished severely, while 7th round cuts are almost expected.

Scoring System
Round 7 scoring concept below. Player scoring further below:
Category A Picks Round 7 (1000 points) - All-Pro. It would be highly unusual to see players selected in Rounds 7 to become All-Pro after 2 seasons of play. But give them a few more years, and a few 7th round "project" types may end up in Honolulu.
Category B Picks Round 7 (600 points) - Solid Starter. After 2 seasons in the NFL, a few players selected in Round 7 may achieve an entrenched starter status. This outcome would strongly exceed expectations and a cause for celebration by the Scouting Dept. In addition to these, some inexperienced or physically not fully mature players drafted as "projects" may achieve Category B given a few more seasons.
Category C Picks Round 7 (300 points) - Rotational Player. Getting a valuable rotational player from a 7th round draftee would be regarded as a successful outcome from the scouting crew. Teams with solid talent evaluators can find gems in the later rounds year after year. The "project" type players may see rotational time in first 2 seasons.
Category D Round 7 (100 points) - Backup Player. A player serving in a backup role drafted in the 7th round would be regarded as a success. If combined with outstanding Special Teams play, player could stamp out a decent NFL career. These players can see extensive PT if starter is injured.
Category E Round 7 (0 points) - This category may be par for the course for 7th round picks. Hang around the league a few years as a practice squadder or 3rd stringer, then move out of the league to their post football lives.
Category F Round 7 (0 points) - Cut. Many, if not most 7th rounders are cut before completing 2 years of play. A disappointment to the team's scouting crew no doubt, however all players drafted this low carry some type of weakness or baggage.
Traded Players Round 7 (various) - Scores determined based on compensation received and performance prior to trade.
Specialists (all rounds) - Punters and Placekickers, if drafted, are expected to make the team despite the round. Scoring is +100 if the specialist successfully makes the team, and -100 if specialist is cut.

| 210 | Atlanta |
Vance Walker Georgia Tech DT43 Reach/Value: +45 |
GRADE C SCORE 300 |
| Atlanta uses a heavy rotation at the DT Spot. Their Tackles see time in roughly this order: one 65%, one 60%, one 50% and one 25%. The 25% guy has been Vance Walker each of the past 2 years. He has been a steady contributor, and has seen a modest uptick in snaps played: 249 in 2009, followed by 297 in 2010. Contributed 13 tackles in '09 and 17 last season |
| 211 | St Louis |
Chris Ogbonnaya Texas RBF Reach/Value: -100 |
GRADE F+/E- SCORE 0 |
| Was a member of the Rams practice squad for much of the '09 season before getting promoted to the 53-man roster for Week 12, though he remained inactive until Week 16. Over the final 2 games he rushed 11 times for 50 yards over 49 offensive snaps. Released by the Rams in the 2010 final cut, Ogbonnaya was picked up by Houston - a member of the Texans practice squad in 2010. |
| 212 | Kansas City |
Javarris Williams Tennessee St RBF Reach/Value: +16 |
GRADE F+/E- SCORE 0 |
| On the Chiefs practice squad for a majority of his rookie season in '09. He made his 1st regular season appearance during Week 13 after the season-ending injury to Kolby Smith. Williams participated in 29 snaps over 4 games (0 starts), rushing 6 times for 6 yards. Waived in 2010, He joined the Seahawks practice squad in Oct. '10 but saw no regular season time last season. |
| 213 | Philadelphia |
Paul Fanaika Arizona State OG Reach/Value: -237 |
GRADE F SCORE 0 |
| Waived prior to 2009 season but added to Eagles' practice squad. Signed away by Redskins mid-season, who waved him prior to 2010 training camp. The Browns added him to their preseason roster but he spent most of 2010 on Cleveland's practice squad. Signed away by the Seahawks in November but still has not appeared in a regular season game. |
| 214 | Miami |
JD Folsom Weber St OLB34 Reach/Value: -217 |
GRADE F+/E- SCORE 0 |
| Folsom participated in 2 games as a rookie but only on special teams. He was either on the practice squad or inactive on gamedays. He didn't make it to the regular season with Miami in 2010, waived but signed to the Bears PS. They let him go & he went to Arizona before ending his sophomore campaign with the Buccaneers. |
| 215 | Cincinnati |
Fui Vakapuna BYU RBF Reach/Value: -220 |
GRADE F+/E- SCORE 0 |
| In 2 seasons Vakapuna has yet to be active on gameday. Though he is currently with the Bengals, for a brief period he was in Arizona after Cincinnati released him. Making no meaningful contributions at this time. |
| 216 | Carolina |
Captain Munnerlyn South Carolina CB Reach/Value: +24 |
GRADE B-/C+ SCORE 400 |
| Considered a top-100 prospect through the early draft process, but CB's of his stature (5'8", 186) tend to be frowned upon. However Munnerlyn used that slight and has performed admirably for the Panthers. He's played in all 32 games in his career and rates #37 out of 100 CBs per Pro Football Focus in 2010. 438 snaps played in 2009, followed by 719 in 2010, he's started 9 games to date. |
| 217 | Tampa Bay |
E.J. Biggers Western Michigan CB Reach/Value: -191 |
GRADE D SCORE 300 |
| Biggers suffered a severe shoulder injury in 2009 which landed him on IR after week 1. But he was thrown into the fray as a soph. Biggers played in all 16 Buccaneer games, making 6 starts & playing 690 defensive snaps. Produced 56 tackles, broke up 11 passes & had 1 INT. Filled in for Talib when suspended/injured. Rated the #82 CB out of 100 in 2010 - should improve in '11 |
| 218 | Green Bay |
Brad Jones Colorado OLB34 Reach/Value: -119 |
GRADE C SCORE 300 |
| Jones was expected to be a special teams contributor when drafted. He was, but nobody could have anticipated him stepping in for Aaron Kampman at OLB when Kampman was lost for the season. Jones surprised everyone with 15 tackles and 4 sacks as a starter - taking 404 snaps in 9 games. Jones was an on and off starter in year two before being his season ended with an injury in game 7. |
| 219 | San Francisco |
Curtis Taylor LSU FS Reach/Value: +7 |
GRADE E+ SCORE 25 |
| Played in 7 games as a rook in 2009, mostly on special teams. Didn't start on defense and saw just 10 snaps at FS, with 3 tackles. As a soph he played in 5 games due to season ending injury, making 3 tackles on special teams. The biggest red flag for Taylor is that he ended both seasons on IR (hip in '09, quad in '10). Listed as primary backup at FS behind Dashon Goldson. |
| 220 | Buffalo |
Ellis Lankster West Virginia CB Reach/Value: -103 |
GRADE F+/E- SCORE 0 |
| In a 2009 preseason game, Lankster intercepted the Bears Brett Basanez twice, leading to two TDs for the Bills. He was on the 53-man roster for 8 games (appearing in 2) in 2009 as nickel CB due to injuries - logged 5 tackles in 27 snaps played. Waived at the end of the 2010 preseason, and signed with Hamilton Tiger-Cats but did not play. The Jets signed him in January. |
| 221 | Washington |
Eddie Williams Idaho TE Reach/Value: -223 |
GRADE F SCORE 0 |
| Williams was released prior to his rookie season but resigned to the Redskins practice squad, where he remained until Week 9. He was activated to the 53-man roster but never played on gameday. He was released during the spring of 2010 and picked up by the Bears. He was not active during all of the 2010 season. Fringe player that will need a solid camp to stay in the league. |
| 222 | Indianapolis |
Pat McAfee West Virginia P Reach/Value: -42 |
GRADE B SCORE 100 |
| Despite an incident in which he was arrested for public intoxication, Pat McAfee has given the Colts stability at the punting position, averaging 41.6 yards per punt. (Averaged 44.3 ypp in 2009). We assert that all specialists who are drafted are expected to start for the team. As such McAfee is a successful pick. |
| 223 | Houston |
Troy Nolan Arizona State SS Reach/Value: -99 |
GRADE C SCORE 300 |
| Nolan was injured early in training camp as a rookie (wrist) and placed on IR. Things got better in his sophomore season. He appeared in all 16 games, making 3 starts. He accumulated 49 tackles, 1 sack, 5 passes defensed and 3 INTs over 413 defensive snaps at FS/SS. Rotational/Backup guy in weak Texans secondary - probably not starter-material but perhaps Nolan can develop. |
| 224 | San Diego |
Demetrius Byrd LSU WR Reach/Value: +34 |
GRADE F SCORE 0 |
| Despite being in a serious car accident a week prior to the '09 draft, San Diego took a chance. They placed him on the non-football injury list for all of 2009 & eventually cut him in the spring of 2010. He has not yet played a regular season NFL game. |
| 225 | Denver |
Blake Schlueter TCU OC Reach/Value: -23 |
GRADE F SCORE 0 |
| The former Horned Frog did not make it all the way through training camp with Denver as a rookie, getting released in early September. He signed with the Seahwaks practice squad but was released a week later. Eventually landed in Atlanta but was not active at all as a soph in 2010. Yet to play an NFL game. |
|
|
| 226 | Pittsburgh |
A.Q. Shipley Penn State OC Reach/Value: +67 |
GRADE E SCORE 0 |
| The Pennsylvania native and Penn State grad was released by the Steelers prior to the 2009 season but was resigned to their practice squad, where he spent the entire season. During the 2010 offseason he hopped across the state and signed with the Eagles. He spent all of 2010 on Philly's practice squad. |
| 227 | Dallas |
Mike Mickens Cincinnati CB Reach/Value: +89 |
GRADE F SCORE 0 |
| Mickens didn't make it through training camp with the Cowboys, getting cut just prior to the regular season. Picked up and made a regular season appearance with Tampa Bay, playing special teams in Week 10. He also has been on the Bengals practice squad. Currently out of the NFL and a member of the CFLs Calgary Stampeders. |
| 228 | Detroit |
Lydon Murtha Nebraska OT Reach/Value: +7 |
GRADE D SCORE 100 |
| Signed off of Detroit's practice squad by Miami, active for 1 game in 2009 with no offensive snaps. Started 4 game (in 8 appearances) in 2010 when starter Vernon Carey went on IR (shoulder). Carey had a string of 87 consecutive starts, and Murtha struggled to replace him. Played 237 offensive snaps. Not starter material at this point (if ever) but Miami seems okay with Murtha as a backup. |
| 229 | Dallas |
Manuel Johnson Oklahoma WR Reach/Value: +24 |
GRADE E SCORE 0 |
| Johnson's Cowboys career has revolved around the practice squad for the most part. He was activated to the 53-man roster and saw PT at the end of the 2010 season. He played in 2 games (0 starts) and made 1 catch for 6 yards. When active he had a larger role on special teams. Will fight for roster spot in 2011. |
| 230 | Philadelphia |
Moise Fokou Maryland OLB43 Reach/Value: -142 |
GRADE B/B- SCORE 500 |
| Played in every game (4 starts) as a rookie, making 42 tackles in 211 defensive snaps. In 2010 he again played in every Eagles game, eventually becoming the strong-side LB starter. In his 427 snaps he accumulated 54 tackles and 1 sack. Default starter entering 2011 but will face competition from 2011 draftee Casey Matthews |
| 231 | Minnesota |
Jamarca Sanford Mississippi FS Reach/Value: -16 |
GRADE C-/D+ SCORE 200 |
| Played in 16 of the Viking's 18 games in 2009, with 1 start (at FS, Week 14). In his 135 defensive snaps Sanford made 30 tackles. In 2010 he played in 12 games (2 starts), making 22 tackles & 1 sack in 219 snaps. A key cog in Kick/Punt return coverage for Minnesota. Excellent production out of a 7th rounder. |
| 232 | New England |
Julian Edelman Kent State WR Reach/Value: +104 |
GRADE C SCORE 300 |
| Played in 12 of 18 games as a rookie in 2009, with 8 total starts (reg. + post season). Made 43 catches for 403 yards and 3 TDs in 389 snaps. Also a big contributor on special teams, returning some punts and kicks. In 2010 Edelman appeared in 16 of the teams 17 games (4 starts) and caught 8 balls for 98 yards with 0 TDs. But his PT was reduced to just 189 snaps. Mainly used as punt returner. |
| 233 | Tampa Bay |
Sammie Stroughter Oregon State WRS Reach/Value: -42 |
GRADE C SCORE 300 |
| Played in 13 games as a rookie and had a large role. He played on coverage teams, returned punts and kicks, and saw time at WR. In 301 offensive snaps, he caught 31 balls for 334 yards and 1 TD. In 2010, he played another 12 games, with 4 spot starts. He was limited in his return duties but did make 24 catches for 239 yards despite addition of Williams and Benn. Solid role player. |
| 234 | New England |
Darryl Richard Georgia Tech DT Reach/Value: +46 |
GRADE E SCORE 0 |
| Has not seen a regular season snap yet. Was assigned to practice squad as a rookie. Injured in 2010 preseason and missed entire year. Still on Pats roster however. |
| 235 | Detroit |
Zack Follett California OLB43 Reach/Value: +105 |
GRADE C SCORE 300 |
| Follett started his first season on the practice squad before getting called up. Played on ST and cracked the defensive lineup for 24 snaps late in the year. Follett used that experience and improved in 2010. In 5 games he played 148 snaps in a situational role (2 starts) but suffered a nasty neck injury against the Giants in game 5 and was placed on injured reserve. |
| 236 | Indianapolis |
Jaimie Thomas Maryland OT Reach/Value: +62 |
GRADE E SCORE 0 |
| The 6-4, 330 lb OL was drafted out of Maryland and didn't see any action his rookie season, being waived in September of that year. On 53-man lineup in 2010, but saw game action on special teams only. Might have trouble hanging onto a roster spot with the Colts focus on OL in the 2011 draft. |
| 237 | Kansas City |
Jake O'Connell Miami OH WRF Reach/Value: -201 |
GRADE D SCORE 100 |
| O'Connell made the team as a rookie, though was rarely active on gameday. He played in just 4 games, but with 2 starts. In 69 snaps he was primarily used as a blocker, but did haul in 2 passes for 7 yards. Spent some time on special teams too. He played in 16 games in his soph. campaign, making 3 starts, including the playoffs. In 124 snaps O'Connell accrued 3 catches for 31 yards. |
| 238 | NY Giants |
Stoney Woodson South Carolina CB Reach/Value: -207 |
GRADE F SCORE 0 |
| Woodson didn't make it to the '09 regular season with New York. He was injured, placed on IR & received a settlement making him a free agent. He was an on-again/off-again member of the Eagles practice squad for much of his rookie year. At the end of the year the Buccaneers signed him but he was released prior to 2010 training camp. Has not yet played a regular season game. |
| 239 | Tennessee |
Ryan Durand Syracuse OG Reach/Value: -207 |
GRADE D SCORE 100 |
| A practice squad member as a rookie during the 2009 season, Durand made the 53-man roster from the start in 2010 - though he was active on gameday just once. He played 7 snaps at LG during Week 5. Listed as primary backup to LG Leroy Harris on Titans depth chart. |
| 240 | Arizona |
L Stephens-Howling Pittsburgh RBF Reach/Value: -192 |
GRADE C-/D+ SCORE 200 |
| Stephens-Howling functions as a kick returner and periodic 3rd down back. One of the leagues better kickoff return specialists, LSH scored 2 TDs last year. As an RB, he played 115 snaps in 2010 with 23 carries for 113 yards (4.9 YPC) and 1 TD. Added 13 catches for 103 yards and another TD. 4 total TD's on the year! PT may be affected by drafting of Ryan Williams in 2011. |
| 241 | Pittsburgh |
David Johnson Arkansas State TE Reach/Value: -57 |
GRADE C SCORE 300 |
| Johnson played in 15 of the teams 16 games as a rookie, making 3 starts at FB. He caught 2 balls for 9 yards in 130 offensive snaps in 2009. In 2010 he played in all 19 games, starting 8 games & playing 331 snaps. He made 4 catches for 46 yards. He is used primarily for blocking purposes, mostly as an H-back/hybrid TE/FB. |
| 242 | Tennessee |
Nick Schommer North Dakota St SS Reach/Value: +122 |
GRADE D- SCORE 50 |
| Was waived before the 2009 regular season but signed with the Titans practice squad, where he remained for his entire rookie season. Made the 53-man roster in his sophomore campaign & was active for the teams final 13 games, playing primarily on special teams. He made 3 tackles & registered a safety in just 5 defensive snaps. |
| 243 | Washington |
Marko Mitchell Nevada WRF Reach/Value: -97 |
GRADE E SCORE 0 |
| Mitchell had a solid rookie season, seeing action in 10 games as a backup receiver and special teams player. Played 67 snaps with 4 receptions. Mitchell lost his roster spot following the regime change and was claimed by Minnesota. He failed to make it out of training camp with the Vikings and is now playing in the CFL with Calgary. |
| 244 | San Francisco |
Ricky Jean-Francois LSU DT43 Reach/Value: +123 |
GRADE C+ SCORE 150 |
| Made 53-man roster as a rookie 7th round pick in 2009 however was not active on gameday until the end of the season. Appeared in 3 games but made no tackles. RJF's PT increased to 147 snaps in in 2010 however. Solid depth player along DL. Last years starter at NT was franchise tagged Aubrayo Franklin. Franklin's current status actually put RJF as the current penciled-in starter for 2011. |
| 245 | Seattle |
Courtney Greene Rutgers SS Reach/Value: +99 |
GRADE F SCORE 0 |
| The Seahawks released Greene prior to the 2009 season. He was eventually picked up & activated by the Jaguars who he played 9 games for, making 9 tackles all on special teams. In 2010 Greene earned the starting SS by Week 2. He appeared in 14 games (11 starts) & made 78 tackles, 4 passes defended & 1 INT. Seahawks gave up too soon. |
| 246 | Chicago |
Lance Louis San Diego St OG Reach/Value: -181 |
GRADE D+ SCORE 150 |
| Louis broke from training camp on the Bears 53-man roster however he was never active on gameday. Fast forward to 2010, where he earned the starting RG spot from the outset. But Louis played poorly and was demoted to a backup role after week 4. He played 270 offensive snaps in his sophomore campaign. Struggled in both phases - but by learning from mistakes Louis can progress in 2011. |
| 247 | Seattle |
Nick Reed Oregon ILB Reach/Value: +39 |
GRADE E+ SCORE 25 |
| Reed burst onto the scene as an unheralded late round pick for Seattle. He was used primarily as a situational pass rusher but still managed 17 tackles & 2 passes defensed in 173 defensive snaps, playing in all 16 games. He also scored a TD on a fumble return. Unfortunately he was injured during 2010 training camp & released. He didn't play in 2010 but is currently under contract with the Bears. |
| 248 | Seattle |
Cameron Morrah California TE Reach/Value: +100 |
GRADE D+ SCORE 150 |
| Morrah made the Seahawks active roster as a rookie, primarily as a reserve/blocking TE. He made 1 catch in 3 games, playing just 4 snaps before getting injured. Morrah's snaps increased to 241 in 2010 when he played 17 games (starting 3) including the playoffs. He accrued 13 receptions for 181 yards. Morrah was injured during the teams final playoff game but should be healthy for 2011. |
| 249 | Cincinnati |
Clinton McDonald Memphis DE43 Reach/Value: +65 |
GRADE D/D- SCORE 75 |
| As a rookie in '09 McDonald was never on the active roster. He made no impact that year. 2010 started out the same but it ended differently. McDonald was activated prior to week 9 & remained on the gameday roster the rest of the season. In 59 defensive snaps at DT, McDonald made 4 tackles. He's seems to be roster filler at the moment & his stay in Cincinnati may be tenuous at best. |
| 250 | Jacksonville |
Rashad Jennings Liberty RBF Reach/Value: +167 |
GRADE C SCORE 300 |
| Jennings has been a steal for the Jaguars. After spending 09 as a backup to MJD, Jennings stepped up in 10 and was the top backup, starting three games while MJD was hobbled. As a rook Jennings accrued a modest 39 carries for 202 yards (5.2 ypc) and 1 TD. Offensive involvement increased considerably in 2010: 84 carries for 459 yds (5.5 ypc) and 4 TD. Also added 26 catches for 222 yds |
| 251 | Chicago |
Derek Kinder Pittsburgh WRF Reach/Value: -182 |
GRADE E SCORE 0 |
| The 3rd WR drafted by the Bears in 2009. He was released prior to 2009 season. Never played a NFL game. Despite an extensive search, we've been unable to identify what Kinder has been up to in the past 2 years since his release. |
| 252 | Cincinnati |
Freddie Brown Utah WRF Reach/Value: +94 |
GRADE E SCORE 0 |
| Brown was a practice squad player for the Bengals in 2009 and part of 2010 before the Vikings signed him away. He has not yet been on the active roster for either team. |

| 254 | Arizona |
Trevor Canfield Cincinnati OG Reach/Value: +139 |
GRADE E SCORE 0 |
| Canfield was cut during the final roster trimming in 2009 and was then signed to the practice squad. The Seahawks then claimed Canfield off the PS and he spent the year as an inactive. Also spent time in camp with Detroit but has never seen game action. |
| 255 | Detroit |
Dan Gronkowski Maryland TE Reach/Value: +54 |
GRADE T SCORE 150 |
| Gronkowski was waived during final cuts and the stashed on the practice squad for the first month of the season, getting promoted to the active roster following that. Gronk only saw action in two games in his only season for Detroit. He was traded for Alphonso Smith during the offseason and saw action in 12 games for the Broncos as a ST player and backup TE. Scoring based on trade value. |
| 256 | Kansas City |
Ryan Succop South Carolina PK Reach/Value: -167 |
GRADE B SCORE 100 |
| Succop became the teams starting K as a rookie, converting 25 of 29 FGs and 29 of 29 extra points. He rated as the 4th best K in 2009. But be stumbled a bit in 2010, dropping to 23rd. He made 20 of 26 FGs, 42 of 42 in 2010, missing a couple in the 30-39 range. Seems to be entrenched as the starter but needs to show more consistency. |
