Brandon Beane is a wizard, but he's had his hands full this offseason.

  • C - Another concussion for Morse at Center has kept the OL from their Target: gelling into a Starting Five. Backup Center Spencer Long's 3-year contract looks like genius, until you check Long's PFF numbers of 45.9 (43.7 pass pro), the lowest on the line.
  • OT - By sliding Cody Ford from RT in to RG, Bobby Johnson's found what DraftTek knew: Ford is an acceptable RT, but a Pro Bowl Guard. The left side looks severely average with Dawkins (ranked 40/105 at LT by OverTheCap).
  • OG - Spain is ranked 21/85 at LG, but he's on a 1-year deal. Sirles (injury), Waddle (injury), and Ducasse (sucks) won't be in the Bills' 2019 plans. Wyatt Teller could get more reps, as his PFF ranking is the highest.
  • WR - I think the WR and TE groups are going to surprise America when Game 1 comes around. Cole Beasley is going to be Josh Allen's best bud in the short area, while Smoky Brown and Robert Foster stretch the Bills' fortunes downfield, but the Bills could use a tall #1 WR, and this draft is loaded with tall ones.
  • S - Hyde and Poyer's contracts are up in 2020 and 2021. They'll re-sign, but Safety depth is needed, although RD6 pick Jaquan Johnson may surprise us. See you on Twitter!

The Dolphins have a lot of positional needs. As it stands, the following positions appear to be the biggest of those needs and should be targeted early in the 2020 draft. Josh Rosen leads a cast of players that Miami hope can step up, in 2019, to lessen the areas that need help going into the following year:

  • EDGE - Charles Harris and Tank Carradine headline a poor group of pass rushers on the current roster. A major upgrade is needed here. Harris has been disappointing through his 2 seasons so far. Dewayne Hendrix and Jonathan Ledbetter should see extensive playing time to allow judgment on whether they can be the long-term solution here.
  • OG - The Dolphins have failed to address the need to improve their interior O-Line for many years now. The projected starters at Guard are both rookies who have struggled so far in pre-season. Whoever lines up under center, in Week One, can look forward to a long season of the pocket collapsing far too quickly.
  • CB - Xavien Howard is one of the top young corners in the league, and he recently signed a mega contract which should keep him with the team for a long time. Unfortunately, Miami has no obvious starter opposite Howard. Teams playing Miami should be able to avoid throwing in Howard's direction whilst bullying whoever suits up on the other side.

By the time of the 2020 draft, Miami could also need upgrades at OT, WR, OLB and, dare I say it, QB.

In order to assess 2020 draft needs, we look first at the players with expiring free agent contracts. In regards to the 2019 Draft picks, it is assumed at this point that players selected on Days 1 and 2 will "fill" the need at their position, or one of the needs in the event the position requires multiple players. For players drafted on Day 3, we'll take a wait-and-see attitude to see how they develop over the course of the season before negating a need in the 2020 draft.
