Penei Sewell NFL Draft photo
Reunited and it feels so good - if you're Justin Herbert. The Chargers' stud rookie QB enjoyed terrific protection from his O-Line back at Oregon, and LT Penei Sewell was the biggest reason why. Hailed as a "near-perfect prospect" by reviewers far and wide, Sewell was the first sophomore to win the Outland Trophy in 2019, then sat out the COVID-delayed 2020 season. At 6-6, 325, he has ideal size that he utilizes with easy athleticism, speed, quickness, agility and strength. You can't talk about the guy without raving. Of course, Sewell's smart too. He is a mortal lock to go in the top 5 picks and it would be mildly shocking if he gets beyond Pick 3.

The 3-8 Chargers have needs across the defense and in the receiving corps, but there is no reason to pass on an anchor LT when you have hit on your QB of the Future. Their troubling habit of blowing leads and coming up on the short end of close games could certainly be remedied by better protection for Herbert and bigger holes for Austin Ekeler in the run game. The Chargers are 15-25 in games decided by 10 points or fewer since Anthony Lynn took over as head coach in 2017. A pick like this could get that trend line pointed in the opposite direction for whoever's coaching the team over the next decade.

CHARGERS HISTORICAL DRAFT PICKS

Reach/Value (R/V) Explained
The difference between where a player is selected in the NFL draft versus where the player was listed on the final Drafttek Big Board for the season in question.
Example: A player who was listed at #50 on the Big Board and was selected at #35 will be a "Reach" of -15. Alternately, a player listed at #35 on the Big Board who was selected at #50 is a +15 "Value".

Simply put: a positive number is a Value pick, a negative number is a Reach.
