They weren't able to reunite QB Justin Herbert with his Oregon running mate Penei Sewell, but the Chargers got the other top-tier Offensive Tackle in this draft by grabbing the massive Rashawn Slater out of Northwestern. An agile 315-pounder, Slater figures to have every opportunity to start right away on a retooled Chargers' front line. But after starting every game of his college career, Slater appears ready for a quick start in LA. The "hole" at LT referenced by GM Tom Telesco recently just got filled in a big way.

Snagging first-round grade talent midway through the second at a position of need sounds like a winning approach, doesn-t it? The Chargers were able to pull it off with Florida State CB Asante Samuel Jr at Pick #47. Samuel sat out 2020, but was stellar the year before, picking off four balls and never allowing a hundred-yard receiver. He-s smallish, but has the kind of ball skills and quicks that will be required in the pass-happy AFC West.

The first offensive skill weapon added with QB Justin Herbert in place is big-bodied Tennessee wideout Josh Palmer. Palmer ran a 4.51 forty and put up 21 yards a catch. However, he stayed under the radar in discussion of top WR prospects. Some analysts see him as a poor man's Mohammad Sanu, others feel like his traits and skillset will transcend his college performance. After an outstanding Senior Bowl performance, it's easy to see where Tom Telesco falls in the debate.

A disregard for college production is becoming a trend in this year's Chargers draft. Georgia Tight End Tre McKitty put up 50 or so catches in three years and had a knee injury, but he can block and ran a 4.7 forty. He may well be a better pro than collegian, or he may have gone off the board a little early.

CHARGERS HISTORICAL DRAFT PICKS
Reach/Value (R/V) Explained
The difference between where a player is selected in the NFL draft versus where the player was listed on the final Drafttek Big Board for the season in question.Example: A player who was listed at #50 on the Big Board and was selected at #35 will be a "Reach" of -15. Alternately, a player listed at #35 on the Big Board who was selected at #50 is a +15 "Value".
Simply put: a positive number is a Value pick, a negative number is a Reach.
