In years past the 49ers have been content to wait on cornerback, preferring to bolster the position with proven players in free agency and adding high upside 'traits' prospects in the mid to late rounds. With cap concerns likely to force a more conservative approach to free agency, the 49ers could adopt a more aggressive draft strategy to compensate.
Alabama's Patrick Surtain II has the size and physicality San Francisco covets in its outside corners, but it's his outstanding technique that sets him apart. Though he's plenty fast to run with receivers Surtain has shown he's susceptible to being beat over the top. His game isn't always flashy, but it's always consistent. Surtain is the type of player who will contribute right away and far into the future.

The 49ers look to snag their QB of the future with Florida's Kyle Trask. Trask's upside is limited by just average athleticism, but he's got prototypical size, good ball placement and the willingness to stand in a messy pocket and make a play that coaches love. Decision-making needs work and lack of experience is a big question mark, but coming from a run-heavy offense whose pass game centers around a game-breaking TE, Trask would feel right at home in San Francisco.

49ers HISTORICAL DRAFT PICKS
Reach/Value (R/V) Explained
The difference between where a player is selected in the NFL draft versus where the player was listed on the final Drafttek Big Board for the season in question.Example: A player who was listed at #50 on the Big Board and was selected at #35 will be a "Reach" of -15. Alternately, a player listed at #35 on the Big Board who was selected at #50 is a +15 "Value".
Simply put: a positive number is a Value pick, a negative number is a Reach.
