In November of 2018, the question was whether or not Alex Smith's leg could saved. In December of the same year, the question shifted whether his life could be saved. In early 2019, would he be able to walk again?...run again?...play football again?...play in an NFL game again?...maintain solid-starter statistics and lead Washington to first-place in the NFC East in late November, 2020? Will he be Washington's starter in 2021? Well, the answer was always "Yes" to all of those questions in Smith's mind, but none of us believed he'd be right. The local media and fans have learned a lesson; the business of doubting Alex Smith is a bad business to be in.

The team's offense --and mentality in general-- has shifted completely under Smith's leadership. It's clear that Alex shares Ron Rivera's 'be accountable to each other' mentality, and it shows on the field. The team plays both competently and ferociously whether they're up or down, something that hasn't been true about the Burgundy & Gold for over two decades. Over the past 3 games with Alex as the starter, the offense has moved from 31st in Football Outsiders' DVOA to 26th, which isn't much of a jump until you consider the fact that the team moved up 5 spots even though the first eight games continues to bog down the team's stats.

The running offense has been dynamic and consistent (which improved dramatically with Smith at the helm) and now ranks 8th in the NFL in DVOA. Having said all of this, the team needs to be looking at the 2020 NFL Draft to grab their QB of the Future if this momentum is going to continue. Winning the division --and therefore dropping to a pick in the late teens-- would NOT help them do that.

WASHINGTON HISTORICAL DRAFT PICKS

Reach/Value (R/V) Explained
The difference between where a player is selected in the NFL draft versus where the player was listed on the final Drafttek Big Board for the season in question.
Example: A player who was listed at #50 on the Big Board and was selected at #35 will be a "Reach" of -15. Alternately, a player listed at #35 on the Big Board who was selected at #50 is a +15 "Value".

Simply put: a positive number is a Value pick, a negative number is a Reach.
