The Dolphins won't win Super Bowl 55, but let's just enjoy the elusive feeling of hope and positivity the 2020 football season brings. It's only a year since the Phins entered the 2019 season with, potentially, the worst roster of all-time. What a difference a year makes!

Despite an almost-complete roster overhaul, the Phins still have needs in all areas. The fear is that the off-season has introduced more quantity than quality. Common sense suggests the truncated off-season will favor teams with minimal changes. Change in Miami, however, can only be a good thing after so many seasons watching the Patriots dominate the AFC East. Brian Flores will be telling his team that they have as much chance as the Bills to dethrone the mighty Pats. Some things, however, remain the same. Ryan Fitzpatrick looks to have held onto the starting QB job. It remains to be seen how far into the season Fitzmagic will fend off Tua, but who would bet against the enigmatic veteran?

Adding pieces at WR was mostly neglected by the Dolphins this off-season. This is a further vote of confidence for DeVante Parker, but he enters the season nursing another injury. Parker has been too often injured in his 5 seasons so far. #2 Receiver, Preston Williams, looks fit to return after landing on IR in his rookie campaign. The depth at WR is questionable, and the Phins lack a true slot guy after Albert Wilson opted out. Top WR prospect Ja'Marr Chase, has already opted out of the 2020 College season to enter the 2021 Draft. If Chase fell to the Dolphins, they couldn't pass (figuratively speaking, of course).

Defensively, the Dolphins could be very good in 2020. The starting CB tandem should be one of the best in the league with the investment in the contracts of both Xavien Howard and Byron Jones. Kyle Van Noy should seamlessly step in as the leader of the group, especially given his knowledge of Brian Flores' scheme. Dive a bit deeper, however, and there are holes, uncertainties, and concerns. Projected starter, and former RD2 pick, Raekwon McMillan, was shipped off to Las Vegas. McMillan wasn't an ideal fit in the defense and was a liability in coverage, but he was good against the run. Run defense has been problematic in recent years and looks like a concern again as we quickly approach the new season.

The starting Safety pair of Rowe and McCain are both converted CBs. They've both flashed potential at Safety, but it's definitely an area opposing QBs will look to expose. It's also hard to see how the Phins can generate consistent pass rush. Christian Wilkins and Davon Godchaux don't offer much rush from the interior. On the outside, Vince Biegel has been placed on IR and Shaq Lawson spent a lot of camp on the COVID list. Van Noy may spend most of his time rushing the passer, but that then exposes the under-manned LB corps.

With two RD1 picks, the Phins will look hard at Edge Rushers in the 2021 Draft. If the pick gained from the Texans in the Laremy Tunsil trade lands in the middle of RD1, the Dolphins could look at a prospect like Carlos 'Boogie' Basham Jr. from Wake Forest. Basham isn't the most-athletic prospect, but he has some defined pass-rush moves and is good against the run.

DOLPHINS HISTORICAL DRAFT PICKS

Reach/Value (R/V) Explained
The difference between where a player is selected in the NFL draft versus where the player was listed on the final Drafttek Big Board for the season in question.
Example: A player who was listed at #50 on the Big Board and was selected at #35 will be a "Reach" of -15. Alternately, a player listed at #35 on the Big Board who was selected at #50 is a +15 "Value".

Simply put: a positive number is a Value pick, a negative number is a Reach.
